CRAFT
There is a long lineage of craftsmen in my family (from Toussiant Giroux to Thomas Giroux), and for me the primary medium I am drawn to is clay. Ceramics are my way of making meaning and understanding my world. Access to craft is never a given, it is something I build into my life thanks in part to family and friends. I take my work in ceramics seriously, finding that it allows me to unite concept, heart, and process with my hands. I throw on the wheel, teach workshops, hand build functional and nonfuncational sculptures, as well as maintain a regular practice of 2D visual art making (painting & drawing). I’m fascinated by the fragility and strength of ceramics and of the alchemic process of changing mud to stone. My work is in it’s seedling stage, as I have begun to take this seriously as of this past year with the project Fragile Haven (see below).

Fragile Haven (Series in progress)
This series is about the fragility of our self constructed realities, our sense of safety, a reflection on the meaning of home, made in the context and in direct response to the devastating violence, the heart wrenching stories of families crushed under rubble. Yet somehow these works are as much about destruction as they are about hope. It is a question – What does it mean to bring the pieces back together again? Burn and build again.
